Joining forces to manage joint pain

Yarra Radiology is based in South Yarra, with access to public transport and parking options nearby.

People without joint pain probably never think about their joints. But once you’re experiencing joint pain, you become very aware of the joint in question – and conscious of just how frequently you need to move it during an ordinary day.

Joint pain is hard to live with. It can disrupt sleep, change the way you move and hold you back from the things you enjoy.

At YARRA Radiology, we join forces with you, providing evidence-based radiological treatments to support your care.

Radiology treatments guided by medical imaging

Interventional radiology is a medical specialty that uses minimally invasive, image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat various conditions.

YARRA Radiology was founded by doctors who genuinely care – about patients, about outcomes and about doing things better.

Every part of our service is shaped by compassion, collaboration and a commitment to making radiology more accessible for those who need it.

Helping you feel at ease during treatment

Each treatment seeks to target the source of joint or nerve pain to help reduce inflammation and aid improved mobility.

Your treatment may involve keeping still in a certain position while we take scans and use them to guide injections into your joints. Our radiographers will position you carefully so we can scan the right areas. Your comfort is very important, particularly as you may need to maintain a certain position during the treatment. We can place cushions wherever needed to help you feel comfortable.

We know treatment can feel a little strange, particularly if you’re lying on your tummy and can’t see us. At YARRA Radiology, our highly experienced radiologists talk to you and let you know what’s happening, particularly when it’s time for your injection. Sometimes a little chat about what you’ve been doing that day really helps to distract you and make you feel more at ease. We can even play your favourite music if you’d like.

Risks and considerations

When you’re considering any medical procedure, it’s important that you understand the possible risks as well as the possible benefits.

Like many other medical procedures, there are some potential risks with image-guided injections. They include:

  • Temporary increase in pain following the procedure
  • Bleeding or bruising at the injection site
  • Infection at the injection site or deeper within the joint
  • Allergic reaction to the injected substance, including anaesthetic or contrast dye
  • Nerve irritation or damage (rare)
  • Joint swelling or stiffness post-procedure
  • No improvement or only temporary relief of symptoms.

We’ll discuss these with you at your consultation so you can decide whether you wish to proceed with treatment.
